Growing Microgreens Without Soil

Understanding the hydroponic method for cleaner greens.

The Future of Clean Farming

Traditional farming relies on soil, but microgreens are different. At Microbrotes.farm, we utilize a soil-free, hydroponic growing method. Instead of dirt, our seeds nestle into organic, food-safe mats made from natural fibers like hemp or wood pulp. This isn't just high-tech; it's cleaner and safer.

Why Remove the Soil?

Growing without soil solves three major problems in microgreen production:

  • Hygiene: No soil means no grit in your salad. The product is cleaner right off the tray.
  • Pests: Many pests live or breed in soil. Hydroponics breaks this cycle naturally.
  • Sustainability: Soil mats are often single-use. Hydroponic mats are lightweight and compostable.

How It Works

We place the grow mats in sterilized trays and flood them with filtered water. The seeds germinate and send their roots directly into the mat and the clean water below. They absorb everything they need from the water and their own seed energy reserves. Because we harvest them so young (7-14 days), they don't need the complex bacterial network of soil to thrive.

Did You Know?

Not all microgreens like hydroponics. Some varieties, like beet or swiss chard, prefer soil mediums due to their root structure. However, our main crops like broccoli, radish, and mustard absolutely thrive in a hydroponic setup, producing faster and more consistent growth.
